Stay Safe While Snowmobiling

by | Feb 28, 2018 | Uncategorized

Many Canadians enjoy winter outdoor activities, and snowmobiling has become quite popular for both families and individuals. According to Transport Canada, there are more than 700,000 registered snowmobiles and more than 160,000 km of snowmobile trails in Canada. Although snowmobiling can be great fun, there is risk of serious injury involved.

Before heading out for a fun snowmobile ride, consider the following safety precautions and driving requirements in order to avoid injuries:

  • Inform others of your destination and arrival time
  • Contact your local snowmobile club to check riding conditions (e.g., weather, ice)
  • Wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions (including a flotation device if riding over lakes and rivers)
  • Inspect your snowmobile for mechanical integrity
  • Ride within your capabilities and never travel alone
  • Stay on the right-hand side of the trail, even when parked
  • Take extra care when encountering corners, hills and crossings
  • At night, reduce your speed – your headlight limits how far you can see
  • Never operate a snowmobile if you are impaired by alcohol or drugs

Planning ahead, using common sense and following safety precautions can help you avoid snowmobiling accidents and injuries.
